The Secret Serra
Trekking, Riding, and overlanding in Brazil’s Majestic, Little-visited Serra do Espinhaço
New for 2025: Bespoke trips with Gift of Go
All of our trips in the Serra do Espinhaço are dedicated to sharing the Story of Brazil, and the mountainous backcountry around Diamantina provides us with the most enchanting setting possible—a gorgeous backdrop of high savannah, Atlantic Rainforest, and towering peaks, against which many of the country’s diverse ecological & cultural elements coalesce and the defining themes of brasileiridade (Brazilianness) reveal themselves.
In 2025, for the first time ever, we’ll be guiding private, bespoke treks, rides, and overlanding tours of the Espinhaço, and we couldn’t be more excited about it. In our minds, there is no more enriching way to experience a place than to travel slowly through it, and the Espinhaço’s labyrinth of historic trails & bucolic dirt roads lend themselves perfectly to that endeavor.
On this page, you’ll find everything you need to know about trekking, riding, and overlanding with us as part of a Bespoke Trip. We look forward to answering any questions you may have, and to traveling with you in this majestic & unheralded part of the planet in 2025.
Até!
Eddie & Elisa
Bespoke Trips: At A Glance
-
As much time we as spend in Land Cruisers & on horses, walking is still our default way of travel in the Espinhaço, as well as our most sought out guided activity. We therefore tend to see the region—and our Circuits (see our Circuits section, below)—through the eyes of trekkers.
While the information on this page focuses largely on trekking, much of that information is germane to horseback riding, overlanding, and even cycling.
We’ll add pages dedicated to each of those specific activities as time allows. In the meantime, should you have any questions about the activities involved with our trips, please don’t hesitate to contact us.
-
Each & every one of our private trips is custom-built for the travelers who come with us, based on your goals & preferences, our recommendations, and the scope of options that the Espinhaço has to offer.
To learn more about specific route possibilities, including landscapes & ecosystems, trails, communities, waterfalls, and more, see the Our Circuits section of this page.
To learn more about the food possibilities on our trips, see the What We Eat section of this page.
To learn about accommodations, see the Where We Sleep section of this page.
-
All of our private trips include two (2) full-time Guides, who double as Translators, as well as one (1) full-time Support & Rescue Driver per every 2 travelers after the first (e.g. solo travelers will have 1 Driver, a group of 3 travelers will have 2 Drivers, a group of 5 travelers will have 3 Drivers, etc.)
Additional Crew Members, including Naturalists / Regional Guides, Porters, Cooks, Local Guides, Horsemen, Boatmen, and additional Support & Rescue Drivers are all available upon request, and may be beneficial or necessary depending on the scope of your itinerary.
-
Our Bespoke Trips are different from our Journeys & Small Group Expeditions in that they are 100% built-to-suit. This means that many of the key details of your itinerary
Our Starting Prices include three (3) full-time Crew Members (2 Guides/Translators and 1 Support & Rescue Driver per every 2 travelers after the first), as well as all accommodations, meals, ground transportation, high quality trekking equipment (as requested), fees & permits, and more.
Our Starting Prices do not include horses, pack mules, water transportation (e.g. boats, canoes, etc.), porters, cooks, naturalists, regional guides, local guides, boatmen, or horsemen, although each of these is available upon request, and may be mandatory depending on your itinerary.
None of our trips include airfare, travel insurance (mandatory for all of our trips), souvenirs, or tips (if any).
For more information about what is & isn’t included on our trips, see our Inclusions section on this page.

You don’t have to be a seasoned pro or highly conditioned athlete to enjoy trekking in the Espinhaço, nor is trekking the only way to enjoy the region.
If you’re new to trekking but are up to task, we’ll be sure to that into account while crafting your itinerary. As a general rule, we recommend beginning your training as soon as possible, but with the understanding that the most important qualities that a traveler can possess (aside from being in good overall cardiovascular health, which is critical) are their determination, optimism, level-headedness, and trust in their guides.
While being in outstanding physical condition certainly helps—especially during the first few days of the trip—our experience is that that most determined, optimistic, reasonably fit travelers are able to complete & enjoy the itineraries we create, in part because they are crafted specifically with your experience & fitness levels in mind, and in part because (somewhat counter-intuitively) walking long distances tends to get easier as we progress.
If you’re wanting to experience the region by vehicle (with light hiking thrown in daily), know that waterfalls & swimming holes abound, often just minutes away from the charming towns & villages where we stay, and the region’s adventurous & bucolic roads offer plenty of rewarding alternatives to backcountry trails.
All of which is to say: if you’re looking for a highly active & challenging trek, you’re in the right place, but if you’re more interested in taking in the warm culture, open landscapes, and good life in the Espinhaço than in pushing your limits, we have you covered there, too.
-
Gear is always a hot topic prior to trips—we’ll dedicate an entire pre-expedition meeting to discussing it prior to your trip—and rightfully so. Having the right footwear, clothing, and equipment on any extended trek or ride is critical, and the Espinhaço’s terrain, in particular, can be uniquely challenging.
We’ll provide you with a written itinerary & a comprehensive pack list prior to your trip, and are more than happy to provide you with any/all of the high-quality trekking equipment you’d like, upon request.
If you have questions about gear now, please feel free to contact us.

We expect questions, and there are few things we enjoy talking about more than the Serra do Espinhaço or our trips. If you’re interested in doing a private trip with us and have any questions, we’ll be happy to hear from you.
Our Circuits
There are countless ways to divide the Serra do Espinhaço. As researchers, documentarists, and storytellers, we’ve found it most natural to divide sociogeographically, resulting in 4 large & distinct “Circuits”: the mountainous former mining lands southeast of Diamantina; the unpopulated high savannah wilderness of Sempre Vivas National Park; the agrarian lowlands along the western escarpment of the Espinhaço, and the sparsely populated mining & flower-picking region north & northwest of Diamantina.
Traveled alone, each Circuit tells a unique & compelling passage of life in Brazil. Together, well, that’s the Story of Brazil as only the Serra do Espinhaço can tell it.
The Serra
Drinkable white-sand-beach waterfalls & pristine cola-colored rivers. A labyrinth of lost trails winding across Seussian landscapes. Soaring peaks, picturesque mountain hamlets, and a slow-motion carousel of lush high savannah vistas.
If we were to draw up the perfect stretch of backcountry to introduce travelers to the stunning natural beauty, warm culture, and compelling history of the Espinhaço, it would look a lot like this. Prepare yourself for some of the most enchanting trekking, riding, and overlanding anywhere in South America.
The Garden
Big cats, sharp plants, and (very) overgrown trails. Lost-world waterfalls & nameless peaks. Disputed lands. Forsaken ranches. Tree-sized flowers. And some of the most pristine high savannah landscapes on Earth.
Sempre Vivas National Park is as daunting as it is glorious. If you’re looking for a true wilderness experience in the Cerrado—and enjoy a little old-fashioned bushwhacking with your trekking (or riding, or off-roading)—this is the region. Few places manage to feel this wild, this overlooked, and this magical.
The Sertão
Festive cowtowns, mystical railway settlements, and far-flung single-family outposts. Ice-cold cervejas & hot spring resorts. Legendary waterfalls. Legendary hospitality. And miles (& miles) of open dirt road.
The bucolic scenery and vast, relatively* flat distances between communities in the lowlands west of the Espinhaço lend themselves to pilgrimatic treks, spirited gallops, and blissful roadtrips. Come for the waterfalls, stay for the festive evenings, and for the lingering sense of peace, warmth, and joy.
The Berço
Secret river valleys & thunderous falls. Forgotten mining towns & soulful quilombola communities. Intimate homestays. Wood-fired meals over tales of hardship & glory. A slave-built highway cascading gracefully into the City of Diamonds.
The vast region to the north & northwest of Diamantina is at once its most explored (in terms of natural resources), its least explored (in terms of tourism), and its most neglected (in terms of its communities). In the Espinhaço, you’re already deep in the Story of Brazil. This is for those who are ready to go deeper…
Bespoke Trips: Highlights
V. WHere We Sleep
From heartwarming homestays to daunting abandoned ranches; savannah-enshrouded rock shelters to oasis-like resorts, the Espinhaço features an incredibly diverse array of accommodations, each with the potential to enrich our understanding of Brazil, the Serra do Espinhaço, and ourselves…
V. WHat We Eat
Tropeiro. Torresmo. Frango com quiabo. If you’re unfamiliar with comida mineira, you will be by the end of the trip—and Brazilians everywhere will be jealous. From piping hot, highly caloric homemade meals—prepared by skilled hands & well-seasoned cast-iron pots over wood-fired stoves—to sophisticated offerings in Diamantina, well, let’s just say we rarely meet our weight-loss goals during trips. It’s worth it. Bom apetit!
Crew
-
Eddie
Guide / Translator
The bumper sticker on his ‘89 Toyota Bandeirante (Brazilian Land Cruiser) may read “Lost Texan”, but don’t be fooled: Dallas-born Eddie has dedicated himself to the study of Brazilian history, society, and geography for the better part of two decades. He first “rediscovered” the Serra do Espinhaço in 2018, and has spent nearly 5 years since documenting its labyrinth of lost trails & inhabitants, becoming arguably the region’s most well-versed foreigner in a century during the process. The only thing he enjoys more than exploring this spectacular & little-known part of the world is bringing it to life for other adventurous & culturally curious travelers.
-
Elisa
Guide / Translator
The first time Elisa encountered the daunting “roads” of São Gonçalo do Rio das Pedras during a fateful weekend getaway in 2019, she swore to her mom she would never come back. These days, she can’t seem to leave the Espinhaço, having spent the better part of her life since then driving all manner of backroads—usually with various drones, satellite devices, emergency contacts, and communications equipment in tow—in a gangly leaf-sprung 4x4 named “Gaucha”. Bringing itineraries to life in this part of the world requires steadfast determination, impeccable planning, outstanding communication, and (lots of) patience. The rest of us just require Elisa.
-
Júlio
Guide / Naturalist
The difference between a good guide and a great one is the calling, and in Julio’s case, that was never a question. Passionate, dedicated, and bursting with the knowledge, energy, and conviction necessary to make the world a better place, he’s both a natural-born mountain guide & a natural-born man for others. Should you opt for a larger crew during your trip, you’ll get to witness him put both of these callings (as well as his degree in Geography) to use. When the brush is thick, snakes abound, the sunlight is dimming, and there are still kilometers ahead, there’s no one on earth we’d rather have by our side.
-
Xaxau
Support & Rescue Driver
The eldest son of Diamantina’s most celebrated 4x4 dynasty, Xaxau, like his brother Andre, is adventure nobility without the pretension. In addition to being one of the region’s most seasoned mechanics & welders, he happens to be an expert rider of horses, motorcycles, and (lucky for us) old 4x4s. You’ll see plenty of Xaxau and “Gaucha” (our primary support vehicle) during your Journey as we cut long distances using the region’s labyrinth of dirt roads. It’s the moments when you don’t see him, though—while driving parallel to our route—that puts our minds to ease. In the unlikely event of an emergency, there isn’t anyone we’d rather have close by.
-
André
Support & Rescue Driver
A soft-spoken, big city-loving motorcycle enthusiast born into (decidedly small town) Diamantina’s most celebrated family of 4x4 mechanics, Andre, like his brother Xaxau, is adventure nobility without the pretension. He’s also a remarkable motorcycle pilot, as well as a devoted part-time P.E. teacher(!). As the official dirt bike rescue driver of our trips, we’ll hope to not see too much of Andre during our days on the trail. But it’s his constant, reassuring presence along the roads parallel to our route that allows us to push forwards with confidence. In the unlikely event of an emergency, there isn’t anyone we’d rather have close by.

Trail conditions, July
Weather / When To Go
The daily storms in the Serra do Espinhaço typically taper off in March, making April & May some of the most beautiful months to explore the region: gushing waterfalls, exuberant vegetation, plentiful springs, and crossable rivers.
June & July are mild & dry, with near-perfect hiking conditions: warm, sunny days and crisp, cool mountain weather in the evenings, with hardly a cloud in the sky.
The dry season reaches its zenith in August & September, making both wonderful for exploring the region by foot: the savannah landscape is parched, dotted by colorful bouquets of flowers & cactus fruit, with gently-flowing waterfalls & easily crossable rivers.
The long dry season finally breaks in late September, making October & November unpredictable, but beautiful: the Cerrado is in full bloom, with daily storms creating wet & wild trail conditions and turning the landscape a thousand shades of green.

FAQs
-
The Espinhaço encompasses a large area (about 33% bigger than Rhode Island), with exciting but subpar roads & winding trails that make distances easier to measure by time than kilometers or miles.
The Serra Circuit that we measure all our treks against ideally requires 12 days, with each day less resulting in a slightly hurried or less satisfying route. From a storytelling standpoint, we find it exceedingly difficult to convey the complex & diverse realities of Brazil in less than 10 days. From a traveler's standpoint, we find it challenging to truly immerse in such new surroundings in a shorter timeframe.
At the end of the day, we're dedicated to creating deeply immersive, highly enriching experiences. We believe that the more time you can spend with us, the more impactful & rewarding your experience will be, but 7 days gives us the time we need to accomplish our shared goals.
-
Our private trips, which are 100% built-to-suit, crafted specifically to meet the goals & demands of each traveler that comes with us. Itineraries are informed by our experience & knowledge as guides, as well as by the scope of options & services available to us in the Serra do Espinhaço, but the critical details of each trip—its duration, routes, destinations, accommodations, activities, meals, and personnel, and price—are bespoke.
Our Journeys, meanwhile, which are for solo & duo travelers only, are entirely curated by our crew, crafted to share the Story of Brazil in the most immersive, enlightening, and unforgettable way possible. They are also staffed by our full expedition Crew (5 full-time Members & 10-20 part-time Members), allowing us to engage with the region in ways we would otherwise not be able to. We like to think of Journeys as the omakase or chef’s table experiences of trips, in which we use settings, personnel, destinations, accommodations, and meals as our tools to convey the Story of Brazil.
While our Journeys are informed by each traveler’s respective goals, health, conditioning, and experience level (as conveyed to us during both the application process and pre-expedition meetings), the itineraries themselves tend to remain undisclosed (and malleable) throughout the trip. In this way, we think Journeys are best viewed as true adventures into the unknown.
-
All of our trips seek to share the Story of Brazil via active and culturally-enriching experiences, but they do vary greatly in terms of their duration, routes, crew size, activities, degrees of difficulty, destinations, accommodations, meals, and ultimately, impact.
The fact that our Bespoke Trips are meant strictly for private groups, while our Small Group Expeditions (max 8 travelers) are open to all travelers, tends to make our Bespoke Trips—especially those undertaken by solo travelers & smaller groups of friends and/or family—a bit more comfortable, a bit lighter, and a bit more festive, while our Small Group Expeditions tend to build a sense of camaraderie between like-minded strangers.
Crew size presents a big difference between these two types of trips, as we use full Crews (5 full-time Members and 10-20 part-time Members, depending on the trip) during our Small Group Expeditions, while our standard Bespoke Trips employ 2 full-time Guides/Translators and 1 full-time support & rescue Driver. Larger Crews, which often include a Naturalist, Local Guides, Mule Drivers, Horsemen, Boatmen, and additional Support & Rescue personnel, allow us to engage with our surroundings in ways that our standard Bespoke Trip Crew doesn’t, and to afford an incredibly high degree of attention to each traveler present. Crew sizes during Bespoke Trips depend on the goals of our travelers, and larger groups may find it beneficial to request additional Crew Members to enhance their experience.
As far as itineraries go, each Bespoke Trip we guide is completely unique, crafted using input from pre-expedition interviews with participants, as well as our own preferences as a Crew and logistical considerations (such as trip length, season, weather forecasts, local events, etc.).
Meanwhile, similar to our Journeys, our Small Group Expedition itineraries are entirely curated by our Crew, with the goal of sharing the Story of Brazil in the most immersive, enriching, and unforgettable ways possible; the result of years of testing & operating multi-week crossings in the region. At 12, 14, 21, and 28 days, respectively, our 4 Small Group Expeditions in 2025 tend to cover quite a bit more geographic & cultural territory than the average Bespoke Trip (which requires a minimum of 7 days, but has no maximum).
In terms of modalities of travel, two of our Small Group Expeditions in 2025, A Diamantine Tale (21 days) and The Serra Circuit (12 days) are pure treks, while another two, D/WT+LT (28 days) and The Highlands of Brazil (14 days), are mixed trips, leaning heavily on trekking, but also utilizing horses, canoes, and overland vehicles at times during our crossings. All of these modalities of travel are available during Bespoke Trips upon request.
Geographically speaking, because of their respective durations, several of our Small Group Expeditions allow time to explore Sempre Vivas National Park (Our “Garden” Circuit), one of the most remote & pristine stretches of high savannah in the country. Some of our Small Group Expeditions also feature more nights of wilderness camping than our average Bespoke Trip, although (again) this can always be requested.
In terms of physical exertion, the projected average daily trail distances vary greatly by trip, both in regards to our Small Group Expeditions and our Bespoke Trips.
All of our trips are immersive, objectively challenging, and deeply rewarding, and all showcase the beauty, culture, and history of both Brazil and the Serra do Espinhaço.
At the end of the day, we believe it is helpful to think of our Journeys & Small Group Expeditions as actual (immersive, challenging, potentially transformative) journeys, and our Bespoke Trips as private, built-to-suit adventures. We believe our Small Group Expeditions are some of the most compelling & enriching organized small group trip on earth.
If you’d like to dig deeper into the differences between the two options, please feel free to contact us and/or learn more by visiting the respective pages of our 2025 Small Group Expeditions.
